Driving:

Peoria is located on I-74W equally distanced between Bloomington and Galesburg.

From Chicago:

The drive from Chicago takes about a two and a half hours by taking I-55S to I-74W.

From St. Louis:

It is also about a two a half hour drive from St. Louis to Peoria by taking I-55N to I-155N to I-74W.

From Indianapolis

Driving from Indy takes between 3 - 3.5 hours. I-74W connects Indy through Champaign and Bloomington to Peoria.

Foot

Walkable city

Car

Designed as a grid

Peoria is mostly accessed by car. Peoria is based off of a grid system. The layout of the downtown was completed by William S Hamilton (Alexander Hamilton's son) and most of Peoria's streets are laid out in a grid system.

Bus

Public bus service is provided by the Greater Peoria Mass Transit District (CityLink), operating 21 bus routes through the city. Residents with disabilities can also utilize CityLift paratransit.

Train

Peoria is served by ten commercial freight carriers and has a long history of passenger rail service.

Peoria was a minor passenger rail hub until the 1950s. Several Midwestern railroads served Peoria Union Station now commonly referred to as the "River Station" which houses Blue Duck Barbeque and Martini's bar. Read more about Peoria's history with trains (click here)

A recent study of Peoria–Chicago passenger rail service was published in July 2022. The study, conducted by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) at the request of a Passenger Rail Committee established in August 2021, estimated that startup costs for the proposed service would be $2.54 billion. The service would have intermediate stops at LaSalle-Peru, Utica, Ottawa, Morris, and Joliet. The trip between Peoria and Chicago would take about 2+1⁄2 hours. The Bike Peoria Co-op is located in Peoria's West Bluff They offer a space, tools, and community resources to repair bikes, share knowledge, hold classes, and advocate for bikes in Peoria.

This Peoria Park District facility is open to the public. This park gives a great opportunity to learn the rules of the road, learn to bike in a safe environment, and the covered pavillion is available for party rental.
